This was taken on my 6am train to Mt Keityou in Kinugawa (鬼怒川雞頂山), my first hiking experience in Japan. I was shocked by how full the train was with people also going to hiking. Hiking is a serious thing in Japan!
These dango skewers were found in almost all small towns I had been to. They were my indulgence before taking train back to Tokyo. The black one was sesame ( ごま goma) flavoured and you could get them with either miso sauce or soy sauce.
Didn’t hike up Mt Fuji during my stay in Tokyo, but hiked up Mt Kaimondake (開聞岳; the “Fuji of Satsuma”) in Kagoshima in the the far south of Japan. It was my only winter hiking experience ever, I really want to do more of it!
Breathtaking view from top of Mt Kaimondake.
Another interesting hiking experience was going up Nabewariyama (鍋割山). The mountain got its name for the Nabeyaki-Udon (鍋焼きうどん stone pot noodles) that’s by a lodge at the top of the mountain. Yes, it was an udon hike, I didn’t recall the scenery but the delicious udon was extra delicious after all the hiking effort! This udon hike was the most challenging one I did in Japan, almost 7 hours round-trip and some very steep and challenging stretches but it was well worth it!
